Latanya Farrell to Bring Her Velvety Vocal Stylings
to MUSIC for a CHANGE Concert Stage
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The MUSIC for a CHANGE benefit concert series at the University of Hartford will present “An Evening with Latanya Farrell” on Friday, Feb.13, at 7:30 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium, Harry Jack Gray Center, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford. Tickets are $20.
Farrell, an up-and-coming recording artist, graduated from the University of Hartford in 1997. However, she did not study singing at the famed Hartt School, but rather pursued a career in education, graduating with a master’s degree. However, when she is not teaching in the Bristol public schools, she is singing, performing, and writing songs. Her vocal talent and style has influences ranging from Celine Dion and Whitney Houston to Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. Her deep-rooted love of performing for her family, church and community led her to pursue her dreams of singing and performing.
This performance marks Farrell’s debut as a concert headliner and she is thrilled to be performing at her alma-mater. She will be joined for this performance by The Bookman Styles Band and other special guests.
In 2003, Farrell was publicly recognized for her vocal gift when crowned champion at the Connecticut Star Search competition. With this award, she spent time in studios around the country sharpening her craft. Since then, Farrell has performed at many prestigious venues such as The Bushnell, the Palace Theater, the Webster Theater, and Foxwoods.
She has also opened for Air Supply and even co-wrote and performed the title track for the motion picture She’s Got It, which won the 2008 TOMI Film Festival’s Best Feature Film award. Farrell’s debut CD, titled Feelin’ Alright, which was just released this past fall, has received great acclaim. More information is available at www.latanya.net.
The University of Hartford launched the MUSIC for a CHANGE series in the spring of 2000, with the goal of using music as means of helping the Hartford community. To date, more than $150,000 has been raised for a number of Greater Hartford nonprofit organizations. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the Greater Hartford Walk NOW for Autism and Autism Speaks.
This cause of Autism is close to Farrell’s heart as she has been an educator for nearly 20 years and truly wants to make a difference for kids who need assistance.
