Today was a very, very sad day.  We received a call early this morning that our good friend Mark Goldberg passed away today in the wee hours.  All we could do was just cry.   Over the past 3 years since we've entered this music scene, Mark and Deb have been two of our biggest cheerleaders and supporters, turned close friends.

If you are reading this, you surely have had the belly aching pleasure of meeting/knowing him.  The party always REALLY started when the Goldbergs arrived.  You could hear him walking through the door.  He would walk right up to the band WHILE WE WERE PLAYING, and proceed to give everyone dap and me a kiss while I was mid-lyric!!!  He and his fun-loving wife, Deb were always the first ones on the dance floor on First Thursdays discoing it away.  Always right in the middle of the crowd, working the Electric Slide or Cupid Shuffle on the breaks -- the true life of the party.   I will miss his incredible sense of humor, hearty laugh and fun-loving energy.

I learned so much about truly enjoying life with Jason, our children, family and friends through Mark and Deb.  I am so very blessed to have been friends with Mark and will painfully miss him.  God must have needed the RIGHT angel to help get His Heavenly Parties started.  Please keep Deb, his sons and family and their many, many, many friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance,
chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast,
a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today,
and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Oct 30 2008 - 3:43 AM

I have had an achy chest cold for over a week.  Dr. Jack hooked me up with a zpak, prednisone and pro-Air.  I couldn't sleep... so I came downstairs, cleaned my desk off, organized my setbook and responded to a few emails and MySpaces that came in since bedtime.  Music - Life has been sooooooooooo incredibly busy since this summer.   I'm so grateful for all of the exciting opportunities, from the outdoor concerts, to finishing the cd, to the play BLUES IN THE NIGHT, to the cd release party last friday...what an engaging merry-go-round!

Outdoor concerts are a blast!  It was great to pack picnic and have friend and family come on out to join the hords of other picnicking music lovers.  We had a fantastic sound company, CAT 9, for many of shows.  Having a sound company, changes the the "quality of life" of the show for Jason and me.  It shaves about 3 hrs off of our "work time".  There is so much pre-prep when we do our own sound -- it's a lot of work, loading in setting up, maintaining the "sound" , music for breaks, breaking down and loading it back in the house!   Outdoor concerts are better in the summer nights...much cooler -- but I learned a hard lesson a few weekends ago -- THEY ARE BRUTAL IN 40-50 degree weather.  I think that's how I got sick!  My chest and chords were burned after the 4th song.  My bandmates' fingers were frozen...Shunk's on the keys -- Billy's were cracked and bleeding from the congas.  LESSON LEARNED -- 2 maybe 3 songs if outdoors or IF NO HEATED TENT...YOU GOTTA BRING THE BAND INDOORS!

BLUES IN THE NIGHT...needs a night of its own, another few blog entrees!  It was my first experience as co-musical director along with Kris Allen.  We ALL truly worked like crazy.  I know it consumed me for a hot minute -- My family was soooooooo patient (xoxo, JJJ).   Lee, Eric, Melissa, Kelly, NRep Staff, My bandmates, Jason and Keith along with Kris, Josh, Chat, "King Porter" and (Lordy Be!) "Lady" Charmagne -- what a run!  What a run of fun and HARD WORK!!!

CD RELEASE, The day of, I was telling my mom that in all of my seasoned life experiences (graduating HS, College, College Graduation(s), getting married, buying a house, having kids)...as and event, this ranked right up there with my rehearsal dinner for Jason and my wedding. At the time I couldn't articulate it to her.  (Mom soooooooo disagreed and I can see why!)  But for me it stands true.   Now that my head has stopped spinning (so fast...it still has a steady rhythm though ;-) I've had a chance to sit on the "why" for a minute.  It came to me tonight.  It sounds a bit corny but...here it goes.
Like our rehearsal dinner, it was an opportunity to publicly celebrate and share with family, friends and everyone our commitment life and each other.  I vividly remember sitting in the living room after coming back from LA with Jav and Mo.  Jason was sitting on the couch with a list of short hand notes (pros/con that only he understands ;-)  And he said, from his business churning mind..."So, you wanna so this music thing?  You definitely got a product!"  We made a very firm agreement try it as long as we do only what fits and works for our family.  So far so good.

I am so fullfiiled -- TIRED THOUGH -- but really fulfilled.  I love writing, collaborating and the process of recording.  I love performing with talented and creative musicians...and when it is received with open arms by supporters it takes it all to another level.  It's been dream meeting and sharing the stage with likes of Wynton Marsalis, Air Supply and Terence Blanchard.  My song "Now that I Have You is some what of a metaphor of my relationship w/ music and Jason. His talent of vision has allowed us to make a way in all this -- together.  He see the really, really big picture with variables, which is so valuable.

We walked out on this music limb a few years ago just like we did down the aisle -- two people willing to take the journey together.  Anyone who truly knows us well, knows how very different our personalities, communication skills, and temperments are.  Our success as partners comes with our ability in recognize each others' strengths and in totally pinch hitting for in areas of need - no matter what the circumstance.  The CD release was thrilling!  Thanks you to everyone!!!!
My mind is so calm and creative now - i love when that happens!  My body is a bit tired -- (I think I was having this conversation with Charmagne) I can see how musicians on tour suffer from exhaustion.  The prep and performing wears on you and your mind keeps going when you should be sleeping.  I SHOULD BE SLEEPING RIGHT NOW!  I think I may have freed up some room in my brain to dream about the fun of Trick or Treating!  I'M GONNA BE A COWGIRL!  Giddy Up!

I was talking to a few friends the other day about the changes in the weather and quickly realized out loud, "OMG, I'm missing fall!"  In the words of our wise pal, John "Sometimes, you just gotta get off the Merry Go Round!"  The events of the summer and CD release were all such great experiences but I feel like we have been in an exciting music whirlwind and welcome a lighter November.

Aug 13 2008 - 11:06 PM

What a summer --- It's been so busy and sooooooo fun. I can't believe it's August already and I am just writing. I have lots of great things to share. The Outdoor concerts around CT with my friends of the Bookman Styles Band have been INCREDIBLE! Playing to the large crowds is just thrilling! The only frown is not having my CD in hand yet. As soon as the cover art is set...it will only take 2 weeks to print!!!! I can't wait!!!

What else...The Bookman Styles Band and I will be performing some of blues/jazz's greatest songs in a production of the Broadway Blues Musical, "Blues in the Night". Conceived by Shelton Epps and directed by Lee Godburn, this production is "an evening of joy mixed with heartfelt pain as you get a glimpse into the lives of four blues singers". The musical will be at the Repertory Theater of New Britian for 8 shows mid- September and early October. It's our first time as a band working in theater together and we are enjoying it! The fantastic cast will also feature Eric Clemons, Kelly Boylin and Charmagne.

LASTLY...My friend, Alex P. Taylor is grinding to get his music on LIVE RADIO...and I really want to help him...

This is a really simple request and can help his new song "Window" get played on Radio 104 and other Clear Channel Stations. It's already at 500 plays!

This is all you have to do...Just click on this link. The song will play. The more plays it gets, the quicker it will get bumped up and played LIVE on the RADIO!

http://www.1041music.com/cc-common/artist_submission/player.html?art=179797

If you Copy and Paste the link into your Address Bar, it will be there for you to play everyday! That would be awesome!

Please forward this info to people that want to hear a cool song about taking your window of opportunity when you see it and help Alex out at the same time. Play it a few times, and WE will get "Window" ON THE AIR!!! You rock Alex! We wish you the best ;-)

Well, off to practice some blues...

Jun 10 2008 - 9:26 PM

Another year older and hopefully wiser.  I don't want for much, life is good and I have so much to be thankful for.  So happy for the new beautiful babies (of my close friends) in my lives.  All are well and healthy.  Have two beautiful kiddos of my own often makes me wish there were more hours in the day.  As much as I try to squeeze it all in, there never seems to be enough time to do all the things I want to do.  I do realize that it's such a blessing to even have THAT as an issue and to not a ever categorize it as a "problem".

FEELIN' ALRIGHT: my debut cd is finished and will be off to print...published by Laladybug Dreams, LLC (and friends ;-).  !  I can't believe it!   It was such a great experience that has left me hungry for more.  So much, that I have begun writing to two new tracks by Nick D (Outside the Box Productions) and with David Davis on a new project for another up and coming singer :-)

AIR SUPPLY: The guys and I also opened for Air Supply at the Palace Theater in Waterbury.  In one word...THRILLING!  From the theater, to the crew, to the stage, to meeting the guys of Air Supply...just THRILLING.  I couldn't believe it was all happening...  When the band was introduced I felt this cold rush go through me and then when they said my name and walked across the stage, I was jumping up and down inside and ready on the outside.  Dave, Scott, Keith and Jason played incredibly!  It all felt so right...another experience which has left me hungry for more.

Here's to another year to keep "dreaming BIG and making it happen!"  (THAT'S RIGHT KG!)

It's been a busy few months! Lots to write and share...

Let's start here...the trailer to "She's Got It" by Jeff Benson of Fear No Man
Productions. The title track was written by myself and David Davis. (You can
hear it playing in the background!)

"She's Got It" was the winner at the 2008 TOMI Film festival :-)

Jan 10 2008 - 9:58 PM

I have suddenly developed this unhealthy fear of singing the National Anthem.  As I walked toward the large red hawk plastered on the court last night my heart was in my throat.  I was terrified of forgetting the words.  I kept thinking how awful it would be and for the first part of the song I was intensely focused on the lyrics and tried to really visualize everything I was singing..."whose broad strips --- o'er the ramparts --- "...

"And the rockets' red glare!"...I felt a rush of relief from my head to my finger-tips all "white-knuckled" around the mic -- I WAS HOME FREE!  I was able to let loose vocally and affectively too.  "AAAND THE-UH HOOOOOOOOOME...OF THE...BRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE (uh)!"

Wouldn't it be nice if arenas had the lyrics on the score board...Oh say, I can seeeeeeeeee that!

Jan 1 2008 - 12:28 PM

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008!!!

It was so exciting ringing in the New Year last night -- this morning.  Jason was too funny in his party hat counting down...10..5... 3,2,1...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  The band took a hot minute to enjoy the moment of everyone smiling and hugging and kissing  -- they didn't even skip a beat as the kissed their wives! Our last song of the night was No One by Alicia Keys (great --GREAT -- SONG!) and EVERYONE  (ages 18 ---> 74)-- including the wait staff, was on the dance floor in a huge circle singing and blowing their party horns...it was great!  I felt so full...and woke up (early) this morning feeling even better.

RESOLUTION TIME...
As I was reading this morning I came across some embracing words by Maya Angelou:
Life is pure adventure, and the sooner we realize that, the quicker we will be able to treat life as art: to bring all our energies to each encounter...to remember that we are created creative and can invent new scenarios as frequently as they are needed.
Specific resolutions have been swirling in my heart and head for the past few weeks -- eat better...excercise...write more...read more...don't stress out over this and that...save money...earn more...and then I decided to be more general about it all.   I decided to make a resolution to breath deeply, laugh more ;-) and to "treat life as art".

Oct 21 2007 - 9:34 PM

My All Stars -- Scott Wattel, Dave Smith, Jason Arnold, Keith Gibson and Micah Logan... Jason and I couldn't be more blessed to be working with these amazing musicians.   The positive energy they each bring is SICK!  (I have received so many emails and personal comments on the band's "energy".)   (I can't say it enough.)  I have so much RESPECT for each and every one of them.  They are very genuine people who are all so very different in their personalities but the same in so many important ways.  Fundamental and creative ways that make "it" -- the live show -- all possible and INSPIRE me.

Whether it is a show or a rehearsal they are all BEFORE ON TIME.  No one is ever waiting around for the other to show up - RESPECT!
They take the time to LEARN and PRACTICE the music prior to rehearsals.  I come with ideas about the set list but at times lack the music theory base to make it seamless.  They take the time to tell, explain and demonstrate fundamentals here and there when we get together.  In rehearsals everyone kind of participates in creating intros/outros and any other ideas that make the song new for the audience and us and to improve the show.  Working with My All Stars, I know I am constantly growing and in a state of learning as a musician (person and a business woman!  - That’s ANOTHER JOURNAL PAGE TO COME).

TO MY ALL STARS...Hat's Off to You!!! Thank you for your inspiration - you teachers, you!

-- "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires" - William Arthur Ward...

Oct 2 2007 - 8:50 PM

It's been months since I've sat down to journal and soooooooooooo much has happened!

I spent much of the summer honing new material and playing private events and the college circuit with the All Stars, sitting in with other bands such as Tony Harrington and Touch and Billy Arnold and Friends, and performing at special events from the Rock Cats games to fundraisers.

June 28th was my last blog and since then, we've added two more All Stars - Keith Gibson "Special K" on guitar and Micah Logan assisting on vocals.  The band is sheer energy -- truly great musicans.  Because they work hard and play hard on the stage, they make each show exciting and unique.  We played Geraldines this past Sunday, and even though I lost a bit of my vocal "locomotion", the All Stars continued to take the show to a new level --- WHY??? BECAUSE THEY'RE PROFESSIONALs (band joke) -- THANKS GUYS!!!

You'll be seeing some new photos and a new website coming soon too!  Candace Jeffery -- AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER -- has taken a live band shoot at the Red Rock, and also photos for the cd and other promotional material.  Too funny --- We almost got ARRESTED in the HartBeat IN FRONT OF HUNDREDS OF WALKERS this Sunday for the sake of one picture.  (Who knew you couldn't photograph near train tracks...??? I DO KNOW!) She really captured "me" as a singer, songwriter, performer -- please check her out at candacejefferyphotography.com  If you go to her home page you can take a look at some of the photos in her BLOG section...(you'll see one of those ones on the track too!)  Feel free to comment if you'd like...

Well off to bed!  So much more to write about, espeically with the All Stars...but later!

PS. Davy D is back!  Check out some of his new music he's on my links page :-)

Jun 28 2007 - 10:59 PM

Last week was pretty busy...

There was The Russell -- always fantastic with the All Stars (Scott, Dave and Jason -- nice job!)  We had channel 30's newest anchor woman sit it for a song!  She did a great job too.

Then on Saturday we played a fun-filled wedding in at the Colony Club in the Springfield, MA -- which came with built in background vocalists thanks to the bride's mom and aunt.  The wedding party was so laid back and danced the afternoon away.  Thank you to the Colony Club GM Deb and staff taking such great care of the band. Congratulations Catherine and Tom!

After the wedding I headed to the kick off for the West Hartford Relay for Life.  The weather was perfect for walking.  Cancer survivors wearing their purple t-shirts,  shared their moving stories prior to their Survivor lap, for which I sang "Hero".  Our friends/neighbors, Dave and Alanna Goldberg (carrying new baby,Ella) brought up the rear with their 3 year old son, cutie pie Cayden, in his purple T.   It was an important cause for me, having family members who have both survived and a few that lost their battle to cancer.  The overall event was really beautiful and I was honored to be part.

The week began with the celebration of Jason and my anniversary :-) .., Vegas here we come!!!

Jun 10 2007 - 7:16 PM

Yes...today is my birthday!

LIfe is good...soooo good. I've got love, health and happiness...what else could I wan (ok, maybe an occasional nap!).  I received comical phone calls from my mom and sister earlier (Love yous).  John Michael -- the cake was delicious and Julia -- good lookin' out on the black rose ring!  I love it!!! Lastly, thanks for the love Joan and you too Mr. and Mrs. Huff!

This morning we had the Autism Walk at Elizabeth Park.  NBC 30, State officials and even Coach Calhoun were out there supporting the event.  This has been my second year singing the National Anthem and supporting the cause.  Prior to singing, NBC 30 anchor, had the entire crowd sing "Happy Birthday" to me.  We walked for Team Blaze with lots and lots of friends and family.  We along with our close friends, Basilio and Marisol Ortiz (Blaze's parents)  will continue to support this cause so that "step by step" together with Blaze and as well as countless others, we can continue to find the missing pieces.  It was a great birthday!

Jun 1 2007 - 11:44 PM

June 1st...

Let's just start with the Acqua show last night...FUN!  "My All Stars" shined all night (THANK YOU Dave, Scott and Jason).  AND the restaurant...CLASSY from the dinner menu to the very attentive staff -- (You've got to try it!).  Julie, the GM was so accommodating and professional THANKS!

The space we set up in was nice sized with the terrace open.  We played to a full room, most of which were "newbies”.  They seemed to really like the band.  Most finished dinner by the end of the first set and stayed for the 2nd set.  Others entered the restaurant and went right to the terrace.  I enjoy PERFORMING for new crowds -- trying to create a positive reciprocity through music (if that makes any sense).  We sang a bit -- laughed a lot and just had such a fun time.  Many said they were coming out the Red Rock next Thursday!!!

The highlight of the night was a surprise dinner reservation -- front and center -- made by MOM AND DAD!  :-)  I wish I had a camera to show you all how hard my mother was laughing when the band played the theme from the Jeffersons -- "Movin' on Up"! -- PRICELESS!!!

AKA Scholarship event tomorrow evening...Come on out! (see the calendar)

May 11 2007 - 10:54 PM

The whole thing of being in music is not to control it but to be swept away by it. If you're swept away by it you can't wait to do it again and the same magical moments always come.
~
Bobby Hutcherson

...Still on a cloud out over the ocean.  It has taken me a few days to settle into myself and put "my joy" in writing.  I had one of my most memorable and exciting musical moments last Sunday -- The AKA Jazz Brunch at the Hartford Club.  I performed jazz (ELLA) for the first time with four of CT's best musicians: Warren Byrd on piano, Steve "King" Porter on upright bass, Curtis Torian on drums and Jovan Alexander on sax.  It was all so new and fulfilling as a learner.  Although I was somewhat unsure and nervous, I embraced and savored EVERY MINUTE of it .

The creativity, expression and freedom, (which I'm trying not to analyze too much) is something I want to-- WILL experience -- again and again in my life.  The moment was bigger than jazz, and for me is NOT a "jazz thing" at all.  It's bigger than music -- on par with ...I was just so deeply satisfied.  That's all I can really say in words right now, don't know if I ever will...

Thank you for the opportunity, AKA's.  We so enjoy working with you ;-)

To Warren, King Porter, Curtis and Jovan -- Thank you for sweeping me away with you!

Apr 24 2007 - 10:02 PM

Life is soooooo good!

I finished writing and recording last week.  It was like I'd given birth -- less painful.  Now the "baby's" getting "freshened up" --- Dave and I (mainly Dave :-) are in the final mixing stages of the CD...I'm so excited.  There are a few vocals left to rerecord but for the most part, my voice will be out there with Executive Producer, David Davis' help...not to mention countless other singers and musicians whom I will shout out in a few days.

More good news...The Famiiy and Friend Fundraiser for Dave Smith's (bass) son, Darryl was amazing.  The support from family, friends and fans was incredibly great to see-- the American Legion was PACKED!  Red Rock "peoples" came out big time.  THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!

...hmm....

...We were back at the Russell last week and had a lot of fun.  Our friends and frequent "flyers" had every table reserved.  We received a few emails regarding our theme from the Jeffersons...GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT!  It feels great to look around and see familiar face after face.  We appreciate your support!

Last but not least, got some great news from a great friend -- BE BLESSED, I sure am :-)

GOOD NIGHT!

Apr 6 2007 - 9:25 PM

Last night was our 1st anniversary of "First Thursday" at the Red Rock...and Oh what a night!  The tavern was PACKED like I had never seen it.  It's so hard to believe that a year ago we were singing to about 12 people, who happened to be our good friends.  Now we have this AMAZING group of supporters (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU) that make every show special.  It's SURREAL and I am truly blessed. AND DONNIE and the crew, thanks for always taking care of the band -- GOOD PEOPLE!

The were lots of spring birthdays, which also made the night special.  We stayed an extra hour for the crowd and it was well worth it.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mark, Jackie, Paula (Mrs. C), Miguel, Greg and Leah!!!  ...And many many more ;-)

As always we had some of CT and MA's finest come out and graciously share the mic.  There is so much talent here, thank you Jackie, Leon, Mitch, Leesy, Marquis,  Mr. O'Dell, Charmagne, Davy D, Chip and none of us can forget Ms. ANN MARIE -- "Dance to the Music!!!"

And too my Allstars -- Dave "American Express" Smith (bass), Jason "Smilin'" Arnold (drums) and Scott "Shunky" Wattel (keys) -- Jason and I could not be happier working with you.  Thanks for making this all so much fun, working hard on a "tight" performance and keeping the music feeling new with your creativity!  " FINALLY IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME!" We love to be working with you!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Went to the David Davis' studio for a while this afternoon to work on a track I call "The Very Best".  I went have my bunchkins lay down some vocals for it, being they were the inspiration for the concept.  When I arrived, Dave Smith (bass) was just finishing up recording  his bass lines on "Feelin' Alright" (nice job, Man!)  As we get closer and closer to completing the cd, I find myself having two states of mind: 1) wanting sleep and 2) gearing up for the next project, whatever it may be.  It's a good place to be...

For those of you asking about the SHE'S GOT IT PREMIER...NEXT TIME....I promise :-) No gigs, no rehearsal...I've already written a bit so...Good night!

Feb 20 2007 - 8:11 PM

Can't shake this cold and it's getting worse.  I feel like I am swallowing tacks and I'm all achy.  I broke down and went to Dr. Jack today...it's not strep, hmmm (and I already had my flu shot) Thank God I'm not gigging this week.  I am MCing the Hord Scholarship Gala and so looking forward to it as a past recipient.  The Hord Foundation helped me through college...unconditionally :-) What a blessing.  I'll leave with this quote by Tracy Chapman - "I've seen and met angels wearing the disguise of ordinary people living ordinary lives"

Now off to bed....

Feb 15 2007 - 8:52 PM

Music, music, music...

I was unable to sing the National Anthem tonight because I just ain't got it today.  It's the "physical" piece that makes me so tentative about this "music thing".   Can't get sick -- no room for it!  But it happens and when it does, "my" show doesn't go on like tonight.  I'm going to talk very little tomorrow, drink lots, steam up and hope for the very best tomorrow at Vibz.

...Downtown Tuesday "DTu"  was so much fun!  We met some real nice people and the band was ON!  (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NICOLE!) Damon Sincere (Power 104.1)  read some of his moving poetry and even sat in with the band for a song :-)  I was able to speak with him for a bit and found out that JEFF BENSON (Fear No Man Productions) will be on Damon's 'What's Good Hartford' this Sunday morning   He will be discussing his indie film that  "She's Got It" on Power 104.1 at 10 am.  Make sure to catch the interview and take a listen to the title track by David Davis and me on the AUDIO page!

I'm watching Stevie Wonder on VH1 tonight and feeling so good.  He is one of my biggest influences.  The concert is great -- he's singing all of my favorites :-)  SO -- Gotta go!

Feb 7 2007 - 11:04 PM

Davy D and I were cooking in the kitchen last night!!!  Ok...maybe not "COOKING"...eating sugar cookies and writing.  We finished the lyrics to a beautiful track Dave composed, right now we call it Time.   When I first heard the song I almost cried because I felt so connected to the melody...the music just spoke to my heart and soul.  For the past few days I'd just play it around the house or in the truck and it would choke me up and bring me to tears as I'd create my own melody and lyrics.  I had (just a few) sleepless nights and then the  puzzles pieces started coming together.  Needless to say, I felt like I could breath a better when we finished the last few words.  It's such an experience and I'm feeling so good about all of this!

...I checked my guestbook and saw the my Danielle and Alyssa wrote!  "HEY DARLIN'S!!!!!!!"  I miss you both soooooo much.  You up and moved to IRELAND on me without a big hug.  Well here's some for you guys XXXXXXXXXXXX (and some kisses XOXOXOXO)  Like you asked, I've added Hero back to the play list!  You two "Dream Big and Make it Happen!".

off to bed!!!!

Feb 4 2007 - 8:50 PM

Just saw Prince perform for the Superbowl Half-time...he's incredible.  Jason and I saw him at the Civic Center a couple of years ago -- yes, incredible.  His stage presence was such that I felt like I was the only person in the audience.  INCREDIBLE!!!

I have been dedicating all of my free time to writing and learning some new covers to keep our show fresh.  It's been a long hot minute since I've journaled.  There is so much to share BUT so little time...it IS the SUPERBOWL even if the Patriots aren't in it...

New keyboard player -- Scott Wattel will be at the Red Rock for FIRST THURSDAYS.  He's really talented and has great affect on that stage.  We received an email Friday that said, "Dave, Jason, "Uncle" Rodney and Scott were untouchable at the Red Rock" -- they were!!!  They played like we've been together for years...it felt so great.  Thanks for all your hard work learning the new music, guys...PROFESSIONALS!!!  You know what was also great???...THE CROWD!!!  Every table was reserved.  Red Rock was FILLED with dedicated and energetic supporters, friends and newbies. THANK YOU.  And last but not least, a shout out to CT's finest musicians for supporting (AL, King P)! Javier Colon, David Davis, and Charmagne -- always fun sharing the mic!

Back to the t.v. I'll write tomorrow...

Jan 15 2007 - 10:34 PM

I had an audition last week for HAIR at the Warner Theater.   Mr. Smith (Jim Smith - see journal entry 2/24/06) is co-director of the production so I jumped at the opportunity to work with and learn from him again.  The call came early Friday morning -- I GOT THE ROLE OF SHEILA!!!  I was all teeth and jello inside.

Jason and I talked about it and were willing to hold off adding more shows and private gigs.   And then it all sunk in...this musical was a BIG commitment.    As we looked at the calendar and rehearsal schedule we realized that I wouldn't have a free moment to write and record for almost 3 months  -- and that is a priority right now.  I just couldn't put the time and heart into the role with all we are working on.

Reluctantly, I called Mr. Smith and he was very understanding.  I knew I was trying to do what was best for myself as well as those involved in the musical, but it didn't feel so good.  I still feel like I'm missing out on a great opportunity with this musical to grow and experience more of the art of drama -- be in a musical with all the songs and choreography -- and to learn from others, especially Mr. Smith.

Jan 11 2007 - 8:25 PM

Today's mission was to get my outfit set for the HUKELAU this Saturday.  My first (and last) stop was H&M , where I met Lisa, an incredibly stylish sale associate.  She put an outfit together for me in seconds...literally.  I tried it on and VIOLA!!!   Lisa also suggested the accessories which I was able to find a few stores up (thank you, Matt!!!)  The whole excursion was took less than 1/2 hour -- that NEVER happens.  I left the mall feelin alright!!!

Speaking of FEELIN' ALRIGHT...David Davis and I are about to do it again...a new tracks 'a comin'  -- "Feelin' Alright" Give us a few more days but in the meantime, come on out to the HUKELAU and listen to the radio promos tomorrow at 8:30am and 4:30pm on 90.7 WTCC RADIO!!!

Jan 7 2007 - 4:26 PM

We really started the New Year of with a bang last Thursday at The Red Rock Tavern.  (We perform the first Thursday of every month.)  The band (Dave Smith-bass, Jason Arnold-drums and Keith Cooper-keys) was really on and full of energy.  The first night we played there was early last spring -- I believe it was in April.  There were about 15 people (friends) who came out and we were thrilled!!!

Last Thursday...PACKED again -- with such a great group of people!  GROWN FOLKS who come out to eat, sing-a-long, dance and just enjoy themselves for a few hours.  One of our supporter calls it her "CHEERS" because it seems like the crowd grows each time by friends telling friends, right Debbie?  (I think you know all of CT, girl!)

Not to mention, it's a show were some of Hartford's finest musician tend to pass through when they are not gigging themselves.  The crowd welcomes them with open arms too!  We were graced by singers Mitch Wallace and Charmagne Tripp -- thanks for coming through.

And to Donny and the staff at Red Rock -- you are professional and fun...AND you treat the band so good!!!  We enjoy working with you and look forward to FIRST THURSDAYS.

ps. By the way, Charmagne has entered a contest to sing with Justin Timberlake at the GRAMMYS!!!  AND SHE'S IN THE RUNNING... you can vote for her at  http://music.yahoo.com/mygrammymomen  Good Luck, girl!t

Jan 2 2007 - 12:03 AM

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  From the Bushnell to Foxwoods, what a year it's been...exciting, exhausting and energizing :-)  Time for reflections and shout outs!!!

First to our parents, Taree, Carl and Jess you hold down so much for us -- always there, words cannot express my gratitude. I LOVE YOU.

Family and friends your support has been overwhelming.  You come out to shows in full force and are so encouraging.  Most of you have been there from day one and understand our grind.  I love you!   New supporters -- what a phenomenon you are!!!  The idea that you come to see ME perform is like something from MTV or VH1.  Your energy motivates me as I fill my creative spaces in my mind and heart.  I so appreciate you!

Having a group of outstanding musicians to work with for various events and projects is fulfilling.  Their professionalism and energy take our performances to a higher level.  As Dave Smith and Jason Arnold say with HUGE smiles and hands on their hips, "We're Professionals!"  Yes you all are and Thank You !!! (Check them out on the musicians page ;-)

Throughout 2006, Jason and I have developed new business relationships and friendships in music and film.  I've also had the pleasure of gigging with some of the areas finest bands including Tony Harrington and Touch Band, Shaded Soul and PrimeTime Players.  It's been so fun and interesting working with and learning from you.  Let's continue with many more successes (Check out the Links page and my MySpace page).

I think his will be the year of recording and honing some music theory and acting skills.  The tracks are there -- (right guys!) and not to mention I wake some nights to hooks and lyrics floating around in my head.  (It may sound neat but can make form some restless sleep ;-)  ...AND I am feeling the theater calling me again -- especially after seeing DreamGirls -- (I'm going back to see the movie again too!)

Last but not least, Jason -- working with you at this level -- you're my yang!!!  I promise we won't skip Vegas this year, maybe we'll play it!!!  I couldn't love you more, baby.

Dec 17 2006 - 9:15 PM

I couldn't have chosen a better time to get sick...

Even though I got a flu shot in November I think I'm coming down with it.  I just crashed after Friday night's private party.  (Nice Job Bhorian, Dave, Jason and Coop!)  I slept all day Saturday and then had a UHA game at 2pm and practice w/ PrimeTime from 2:30- - 6:15pm (The Hukelau on New Years Eve is going to be HOT!!!).

Kudos to Jason who had dinner done, laundry folded --AND--put away as well as the house cleaned when I got in.

off to bed.

Dec 6 2006 - 11:24 PM

Another "session" with Davy D (David Davis).  I'm happy with how "She's Got It" is coming along.  It's such a humbling process though...

I was talking with my bass player, Dave Smith about the session today and we both had similar ideas and experiences.  When we perform covers, our talent/challenge come with putting a bit of ourselves into the song as well as trying to keep the greatness of the orginal in tact.    On a different spectrum, writing and recording orginals doesn't sound so good at times and it can make for some real HUMBLING moments that you have to work through.

Today I had a few Peter Brady moments!  As the song developed,  David and I LAUGHED (I was dyin'!) those awkard moments off and moved on.  The melodies didn't always just flow and we did stumbled over lyrics from time to time.  In the end, we were able to lay down the chorus and the second verse.  We made good progress in just a few hours.

Dec 3 2006 - 9:48 PM

Been spending most of my free time songwriting and really enjoying it...

In addition to working on originals tracks, David Davis and I are co-writing the title track for an independent film, "She's Got It". The film was written, directed and produced by Jeffrey Benson of Fear No Man Productions in collaboration with Ivan Velez and Anthony Colon of Outta Left Field Productions.  (They are all a great group of focused folks -- with VISION!) The film is about...better yet, check out my MySpace for all of their links!  Keep your eyes open people :-)

Nov 20 2006 - 5:58 PM

FOXWOODS...Awesome!  The band was alive and my voice was ripe!  People danced and many stayed for the entire night which was really nice.  The favorite song of the night was "At Last", people seemed to really love it.  The only dissappointment was that my name STILL wasn't spelled right -- TANYA!  I just took every opportunity I could to say my name correctly and share the website. It is what it is.

Thank you to my family, friends and fantastic supporters who came out too.  You give us so much energy and we appreciate it.  Well, off to do it again...sound check's at 8pm!

Nov 10 2006 - 6:52 PM

Off to peform in Hot Chocolate Soul at the Bushnell tonight.  It's a showcase of singers, poets and comics...really talented people and a networking opportunity.  I will be performing "Love" by Keyshia Coles -- just one song, which is nice ya know --I'm pretty excited!  Jav and Mosey are coming too (they'll be here in bit so I better hurry up here!)

Tomorrow night I'll be at the Russell with Keith Cooper and Brian Kelly with a completely different set and I can't wait!  It's nice to change it up.  They are really good players and good guys too -- so it should be a lot of fun.

Bushnell here I come...again!

Nov 5 2006 - 8:17 PM

A gig free weekend...

I haven't had one of those in a hot minute :-)   It was nice to just hang out with family and friends.  I was in bed -- asleep by 9:30 on Friday and Saturday (and I'm on my way upstairs right now!) I'm going to listen to some of Jamel's and Dave's tracks and try to work some magic before I fall asleep...

ps.A big Happy Birthday to my sister, Latareece... I love you girl!  And Happy Anniversary to Mom and Pop -- none betta!  To thirty seven more years of love

Oct 30 2006 - 3:13 AM

I really SHOULD be sleeping  right now, but I can't.  My mind is playing over this weekend from the television interview on Channel 3 (I'll write about later) to The Russell show Saturday evening to the 3 performance of FAME.  Today I had the last performance of FAME with the Hartford Children's Theatre.  The cast was full of energy and so was the audience.  I enjoyed every bit of the experience and have met some incredibly talented people with a lot of heart.

I played the role of Miss Sherman, the no nonsense the homeroom and English teacher who believes that the two things that make life worth living is to love and to work...HARD WORK!  She is unmarried and has no children of her own -- the students at the Perfoming Arts School ARE her family tree.  I am able to relate to her on so many levels, from me actually being a teacher (that's right people!) to sharing her philosophy on love and hard work. I can't say it enough...I feel I was so meant to play that role!

I got pretty tight with the cast fast - maybe it was because of the crunch situation or maybe because they are such a cool group of people .  I came just a few days before the show opened.  We had to work quick and hard at developing our personal/professional dynamics as well as developing our character relationships.  Needless to say these teenagers (and you too - my 20 and older peepss!) scooped out pieces of my heart like ice cream cones by the end of the process!!! I love you, love you, love you.  Thank you Hartford Children's Theater group.   Dream Big and Make It Happen :-)

And to my many friends, family and fantastic supporters that came out...Thank you and I love you, love you, love you too !

Oct 26 2006 - 10:21 PM

"Hey Girl, what's going on???"  "Wassup with your journal page?"  "Where the 411, are you still keeping a journal?"  "Journal...HELLO!"
I am soooooo sorry!  I truly have not had a hot minute to sit and write.  This October, I entered full-time performer mode.  I've had shows every weekend and weekly rehearsals with various musicians.  So...the 411...

FAME - The Musical has happened upon me !  I was originally going to join the cast but was unable to commit due to our music schedule.  God knew I wanted to perform this role -- I was meant to play Miss Sherman -- So he hooked it up!  The director, Lisa Byrne called Jason a week before the show because she lost her Miss Sherman.  We had just recently had a Friday night gig cancellation, so the show, including rehearsals, fit PERFECTLY into my schedule.  I put on my necklace of St. Genesius (patron saint of actors...THANK YOU DOROTHY!!!) and don't plan on taking it off until the run is done!

The night of the first run through, Enza (Hartford Children's Theater) said to me with a big smile, "You know what I love about theater, you are always learning -- you can't help but learn!".  TRUE!!!  I've been reflecting on what I've learned from Mr. Smith (Jim Smith) who got me hooked on this theater thing.  He talked about relating to and understanding my character to projecting to awarness of space to theater ettiquette.  He helped to instill in me such a respect for craft.  And yes, it has been a learning experience.

The entire cast from the tech crew to the actors have been great!  I am working with a lot of very talented and fun-filled folks!  And yes, it surely has been a trip sharing a dressing room with a classroom full of teenage girls...love ya ladybugs!

Friends, Family and Fantastic supporters, come on out if you can make it!  I'd love to share this side of me with you, too!

Oct 8 2006 - 4:56 PM

HUKE LAU...SOULED OUT AND SOLD OUT for the night!!!  What a night!  What a night!! Did I say, What a NIGHT!!!  Great promoting, Julius Lewis.

I started off the night  SOOOOOOOOOOOOO stressed because of my voice still wasn't even at 60% by showtime.  I had to change my set list a few time and finally settled on "THE ONE". I knew I could pull off each song vocally  well and with energy. When I got backstage to the dressing room with the bands I realized that PrimeTime had two of the same songs -- ugh!  Let me tell you what those incredible guys did...Luther (thank you man) overheard my pain and said he'd talk with the guys and they were like -- "No problem, do what you have to do. Our set list is deep!"  ( I wanted to cry but I had my contacts in.)  It felt like a huge burden was lifted and was about to go out and do my thang.  THANK YOU PRIMETIME!!!

SHOWTIME...I missed my cue and came out to the stage a goofy hot mess with a water bottle and tea cup.  I was joking with the audience about forgetting to put on my lipstick, too!.  When I ever stood back and looked around the room --- PACKED!  Not one seat!  And then I started to look around I saw so many familiar faces.  I could only see about 1/3 of the room because the lights were so bright.  I knew Alex and Margie were bringing a crew so I asked all my "latinas" to show me some love!!!  (and they did) Then I asked my friends to come on down to the floor so I could see you and share their energy (and they did, too!)  Friends, fellow musician friends, supporters from The Red Rock Tavern and the Russell were there and well...I'm just speechless.  The dance floor was just full of LOVE!  I kept reaching down to hug and kiss my friends and hardcore supporter (you are the BEST!)  The adrenaline rush just took me to a different place -- in my SCANDALOUS outfit (THANKS MOM!!!!!).

Keith, Dave, Jimmy and Jackie...you were sooooo hot last night!  You knew I was less than...and you had my back.  Your playing, singing and energy on stage was contagious.  The set list situation was hairy and you pulled it off flawlessly -- I APPRECIATE YOU!

In Time and PrimeTime...classy and kind all the way!!!  It was a pleasure working with all of you.  Feedback from the emails this morning...say you were, "fun", "tight", had it "going on" and asked for your websites which I happily gave them -- HEY!!! You all shined last night. Let's do it again :-)

Jamel and Tina came all the way from VA + Davey D...I'm soooo ready, let's do this music thing man!!!  Alex and Margie -- thank you for helping and promoting the event and packing the stage right with your energetic friends!  Julio and Rosa thank you for hanging the poster in the shop and handing out flyers!!! F,M,J,E, Y, C, A, B, S, F and N...you already know!!!  Red Rock Tavern and Russell friends and Geradine's Divahs...much love to you!

Going to rest the voice...Russell (RESERVATIONS!!!) and Geralines this week!!!!  Hey -- I can't wait!

Oct 7 2006 - 4:31 PM

Red Rock Tavern (formerly Kenneys) was off the CHAIN!!!!  The place was packed and there was even a reserved table (thanks to the MA crew) which was a first there!  Debbie came out with friends to celebrate her birthday (Happy Birthday, girl!)  And my Ortiz/Dinnie family came out with RALPHIE on a week night (lol).  (xoxo to Mary and Shauna too) I was so excited to have such a crowd but, also full of nerves because my voice was very hoarse.  WELL, I got a miracle...and an incredibly special night that I am so thankful for...

Hartford's, New Haven's and Massachusettes finest musicans came out...UNEXPECTEDLY...and shared the mic!  It was an all out Showcase and jam session all wrapped up in one.  Artist's did their solo thing and then would jump on backgrounds if they knew another artists' cover song.  It was soooooooooo  much fun.  I was so impressed with my band mates Keith Cooper (keys), Dave Smith (bass) and Jimmy Arnold (drums).  Their musical depth was proven to be deeeeeeeeeeeep and dead on HOT!.

It went a little something like this...

Mitchell Wallace was the first on the scene and not even ten minutes later, Leon Spradley from PrimeTime Players walked in.  I was all teeth :-)  They both came up to sing a song each and the crowd just went wild!  Then, towards the end of the first set I looked up and -- SURPRISE --my friends Javier (Capitol Records) and Mosey were standing in the back with friends.  I couldn't believe it ;-)  He set the second set off with I Wish and quieted the room Song for Your Tears..(wow).  Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, my friends Charmagne (Eight to the Bar) , Steve Porter (bass)came on in with  Timmy Maia.  She sat right in for Good Times with me full of energy as usual and then tore up Sweet Thing! Then it was Timmy's turn to sing Too Close, (one of my favorites to sing when I was in Stimulation), and Mitch and I brough up the background ;-) The dance floor was as packed as it could possibly be. We closed out the night with Marquise filling in on drums and left the crowd wanting more...

Thank you Mitch, Leon, Jav, Charmagne, Timmy and Marquis for sharing your incredible talent with my friends, family and FANTASTIC fanbase supporters.  I've received several emails about the night...and they thank you too!

Huke Lau tonight with PrimeTime, In Time and comedian, Freddie Ricks...OMG I am soooooo excited!

Oct 4 2006 - 9:54 PM

I can't believe tomorrow is Thursday already...I'm still recovering from my gigs last weekend.  The Russell...the Russell...the Russell -- it's great to to have a nice place to play.  The demographic of people, the location and atmosphere...there's a lot to like about it.  But what makes the Russell so special and exciting to me is my friends, family and supportive fanbase that come out week after week.   Bristol and East Hartford teachers were out in full force (thank you!).  Some of my friends have already reserved their tables for the October 14th show (C.C. :-)  I can't put it into words -- the appreciation I feel.  And to top the night off, Freddie and the crew saved me carrot cake and Hugh Russell sent me home with wings!

RUSSELL HIGHLIGHTS:  Cathy's Mustang Sally, Carbone's Entrance, Honorata's Crew, Freddie watching TV (yup), Eddie -Cano-Alie-Jocelyn thanks for coming out (1st timers), the crazy picture with Rocio, CURTIS right up front!, Judy and Tony jammin' in the balcony, one of my best friend from college, Melaine (Dr. McLean ) came to visit -- Pharoah Scott bringing down the house with Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and  Jackie Morris and Dave Smith coming out to sit in just for fun.  (I better quit, this is starting to sound like a yearbook page!)

Red Rock Tavern's tomorrow!!!  I'm so excited because I received a MySpace from another local artist, Mitchell Wallace, saying he's coming through...can't wait to hear him sing!

off to sweet dreams

Oct 2 2006 - 10:32 PM

On Friday I had the opportunity to gig with a fantastically fun band, Shaded Soul.  I had so much fun!  We sang everything from "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" to "Sweet Home Alabama"...and ended the night with my favorite, "Mustang Sally"!  Vincent and Kelly were so full of energy and not only helped me with my "moves" but taught me the chorus to Sweet Home Alabama in seconds  Please check them out...you've got to see my girl, Renee -- she can sing and DANCE like you wouldn't believe!!!  Thanks again, Shaded Soul!

Tomorrow...the Russell -- another INCREDIBLE night with friends and new supporters :-)  (thank you all too!)

Sep 27 2006 - 9:52 PM

Jav's (Javier)show at The Space was really fantastic.  There was a nice crowd with lots of familiar faces who are supporters of local musician (Ortiz's, Ms. Dinnie, Freddie and Rocio and crew, Artie man and Ms. Marie just to name a few).  He performed with Matt Cusson on key and vocals (who will be working with Brian McKnight).  Their vocals were outstanding and their banter was very funny.  Jason and I enjoyed every bit!

What else...

Dimension 6...I just smiled when I typed the name.  Last night we rehearsed set 1 for the casino gigs coming up.  Rehearsal started at 8pm and the guys were there and set up to hit before 7:45pm -- READY!!!  And they were really tight!  When we went over Bet You By Golly Wow (mom  ), it was like magic.  I just closed my eyes and took it all in, ya know...MAGIC!!!

Take some time to check out the musicians page.  It's still under construction...

Sep 21 2006 - 9:10 PM

It's been a few days...

I was SUPPOSED to write TOMORROW, but tomorrow came and went and the only thing I did on the computer was check my email and respond.  I played the Russell and Geraldine's this past weekend and both shows were really fun!

We had a nice turn out of family (Kim, Wayne, Grayson) and friends (Freddie Foxwoods and NY Rocio) for the Russell.  Nothing better than friends bringing friends (Michelle ;-).  Lance, Jason and Steve "new friend to the band" Wallace really held it down.  One of my favorite reasons to play the Russell is the ability to "pull" people right off the street with a song or a wave or...literally -- walking outside and taking a person by the hand right into the restaurant.  The crown loved it and would give folks a big round of applause when they would enter...toooooo funny!  A big "mwahhhh" to drummer Patty A. Miller, singer -  Pharoah Scott, and my "auntie" Grayson for sitting in and sharing their talents.  THANK YOU!  And a big thanks to Hugh for sending me home with some wings :-)  DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday night at Geraldines was fun too!  The crowd was really so great -- even though they didn't dance like I expected, they sat and sang and really enjoyed themselves.  I was familiar with a lot of the faces; many of them were at the last Geraldine's gig.  My Reggae girls were there along with Ashley's crew!!!  My drummer, Jason Arnold, seemed to have a familiy reunion going on-- he had a lot of family there:-).  Keith, Dave, Jason and Jackie were really ON!  It felt so good I smiled all the way home.

I'm glad to have the weekend off, though...Javier is playing at the Space in Hamden -- might have to make it date!

Sep 14 2006 - 11:58 PM

I spent much of this week in developing the set lists and in rehearsals for The Russell and Geraldines.  I'm playing with two different sets of musicians for each gig.  ... Jason Arnold (drums), Lance James (keys) and Steve Wallace (bass) for "Saturday Night Live" at the Russell, and Jason Arnold (drums), Keith Cooper (keys), Dave Smith (bass) and Jackie Morris (background vocals) for Geraldines.  The only common denominator is smiley Jason (drums).

Truly, I can't complain because it's great to have a pool of people to work with and that can cover for each other so that gigs can "happen".  The difficult part is the amount of time that has to be put into the "product" so that the show doesn't look and sound like a garage band jam session.  Everyone's been working hard..THANK YOU!

I'm excited to see my friends and family that have called and/or emailed about coming out this weekend!!!!  (Auntie Kim, Wayne & Grayson, Kevin and MICHELLE...I can't wait to see you all!!!)  There is nothing like having friends and family come out -- your support is priceless.

Well bedtime...tomorrow I'll share my "New Learning":  REALLY know your audience -- A Nursing Home performance I will NEVER forget!!!

Sep 5 2006 - 11:04 PM

The last weekend of summer...GONE!

I performed at a wedding -- I love weddings!  The sun came out for Danielle and Richard's wedding Sunday afternoon.  Her bridesmaids dresses were a beautiful sage -- unlike my crazy teal "Beauty and the Beast" gowns!  (What was I thinking   ??!!)  Congratulations to you both!!!

On Labor Day, I had an evening show for incoming freshman at Western Connecticut State University, my alma mater!  It was a blast!  I got to share the mic with some very talented and comical students.  Thanks to DJ breakin' down the Mustang Sally, Lauren rapping on Vogue, and Kamica tearing up Last Dance .  Lastly, to Sabrina...who's got a birthday coming up...first one away from home -- Make it a great day, Darlin'!!!  Don't forget, "Twister" ice cream shop is right across the street, kiddo!  Hugs and kisses to you.

Aug 28 2006 - 8:52 PM

One of the biggest rewards of being a singer (next to the rush of performing) has been the enthusiastic and supportive emails if receive. On a daily basis I check my guestbook and emails. Some come from friends and family members, while the majority come from individuals that just happened to be out where I was giving a show.

Here is a snippit of one I received today from a beautiful woman -- inside and out. (I hope you don't mind me sharing, girl!)

A.K. wrote:

"Without fail I get to watch folks become endeared to you through, not only your singing, but your personality. Being successful is so much more than just singing well, I’m sure you know that. Yes, diversity and competency in choosing and performing your repertoire is important but without a dynamic personality that exudes sincerity and genuineness you have nothing… You’ve got it all though!   So glad to be a part of your fan/friend base. You know you’re my homegirl too."

I was so touched. If those of you who know me could believe it... I was speechless too.   I'm blessed to be doing what I love and thankful to have people like A.K. as part of my fan/friend base!

Aug 21 2006 - 10:37 PM

This has been my busiest work week yet!  I performed at the Russell last Thursday, Romas on Friday, sang back-up for Barbara Fowler for Family Day Saturday afternoon and had a wedding with Dimension 6 Saturday evening in MA.  I felt like I was in a marathon.

I was so health conscious last week...getting rest, drinking lots of fluids, pumping up with Airborn .  I was sooooo happy my voice held out but my body is still tired!

Off to bed...I'll write more later!

Aug 13 2006 - 10:02 PM

SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM ... I know the words -- which carry a level of affect especially amongst grown folk adults. I can hit the notes comfortably. It takes very little preparation and takes less than 2 minutes of performance. And in addition to getting paid, I sometimes get extra tickets. Bottom line -- I love doing it. I have been a National Anthem singer mainly during the basketball season for the past few years. This is the first time I have ventured to baseball (Rock Cats) and lacrosse (Boston Cannons)...OUTDOORS! The acoustics are very, very different. There is an echoing that happens that I find very nerving. I find singing at a slower tempo helps somewhat but it's still difficult. EAR PLUGS...I think I'll invest in some. Rumor has it -- they work!

Aug 6 2006 - 9:58 AM

So...Vibz...

As I wrote prior...I was STRESSED inside and out prior to the show because I wasn't feeling well.  (Right Jackie  ...THANKS, GIRL) Adrenaline DID kick in but only for about half of the first set and by the last two songs I had NOTHING in my upper register.  I did a lot of smiling and tried to vocally color each song a bit differently as to not lead on to the fact that my musical engine was running out of gas.  During the break the band and I rearranged the list and I sang a mostly male songs.

I didn't get the sense from the crowd that they could tell anything was different because they were so into the songs and singing along.  Which brought me back to thinking about the orginals I am working on and the concept of good song writing from ballads to dance tunes.  I want people the be into my songs too.  I want to create music that has lyrics that people can relate to with chords and rhythms that speak to the body (heart  and hips ).  I know I'm on my way working with Matt Zigs and collaborating with other creative producers including Dave Davis and Jamel Gibson.  I am learning so much and loving this side of "the music".  Let's see where this takes us!!!

Aug 4 2006 - 6:57 PM

I'm leaving for Vibz in about an hour to play with Dimension 6 for the first time and I feel awful.  My throat is sore and I'm really, really  tired.  I've been ODing on tea with honey and throat lozenges all day.  It stresses me to have to perform when I'm less than 100%.  (I don't even feel 50%.)  I'm just gonna pray that adrenaline kicks in and I can hang tight tonight.

Jul 31 2006 - 10:21 PM

Geraldine's was great!  The club has a heatlhy built in crowd of "grown folks" that come ready to dance.

The stage has a lights which looked great and added to the show, but were very hot.  Most of the shows we do not have any.  Needless to say I was drenched by the fourth song...powder was of no use  !!!  But it was all good.

My Aunt Kim, Uncle Wayne and his wife Grayson came all the way from Danbury to the show.  I was all teeth when they walked in!  They held down the dance floor, poppin' and lockin  and even bustin out a SOUL TRAIN line.  They brought so much energy...I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU.

ps. Kim...nice sandals .

Jul 28 2006 - 8:30 AM

I worked for a while with Matt Zigs on an orginal piece yesterday :-) Being failry new to all of this, I find it hard to describe the positive experience except to say it's (in an odd kind of way) full of a range of emotions.  My pendulum went back and forth from feeling confused to competent, eager to embarrassed,  and  from "blanks to blossoms".  The creative process with Matt was introspective and full of new learnings.

As I was leaving, another musician was entering, Alex P. Taylor.  I introduced myself (Latanya like lasagna) and we briefly chatted -- then I left.  He seemed like a nice guy.  The same evening Jason and I went to get a bite at the Corner Pug and I saw...yes...Mr. Alex P. Taylor again!  What a small world...or maybe God was giving me a sign.  We exchanged cards and he had a neat looking card with a stop sign and red traffic light, I think it maybe the name of his album or a track -- CLEVER.  He told us he is working on a 12 song project with Matt and like me, is really enjoying the experience.

Still more to write about...THE STAGE AGAIN...maybe, baby!  But right now we are getting ready to take off to Mystic for the weekend and I could care less about the predictions of thunderstorms :-)

Jul 25 2006 - 6:05 PM

It feels good to have NOTHING planned for the next couple of days...no rehearsals or shows till Sunday -- GERALDINE'S!!!

The Anniversary show (and FOOD) at the Russell last Saturday was fantastic.  Hugh Russell had a delicious  buffet including a spread of cheeses, roasted veggies, fruits, beef patties and jerk wings...OMG!  Entertainment consisted of poetry, jazz and R&B.  The poets, Summer and Nu-Nu linguistically painted images and scenarios with style and a bit of humor.  What a talent...  Lummi Span, Alvin Carter, Doug Long and Keith Cooper were the house band for the night and did a real nice job.  It was my first time working with Doug Long (bass) and I swear he has the fastest hands I've ever seen without missing a beat!  My Aunt Leslie and Harold surprised me by coming out .  They had dinner at Black Eyed Sally's and BOUGHT ME A RIB DINNER for after the show !!!  Thank you and I love you.  I also want to thank my best-est (and only) sister in the world T-Bone for coming out and bringing our friend Erika.  You guys are the best!!!  The only thing missing that night was CHARMAGNE....  She's been busy with Eight to the Bar...Do your thang, Girl!

Sunday's show at Lake Compounce was brief yet fun!  Brief isn't necessarily a bad thing when you are at an amusement park!!!  To Linda D.  you are a pleasure to work with -- Jason and I think you are the bomb!!! AND A BIG Thank you to all of my friends and family that came out...T-Bone, E, the Santiagos, Roberts, Lipscombs and OTEREOS!!!! Didn't we have FUN!!!!???!!!

Jul 18 2006 - 4:35 AM

I should be sleeping right now but it's HOT!  The power just came back on and the AC hasn't quite cooled the house down yet. Not to mention my brain is real busy... It keeps going over and over lyrics to some of the songs I have yet to memorize for the show in PA.  Although I think it's some sort of subconscious learning strategy (which often works), it doesn't make for a restful sleep.

On a lighter note...no pun intended...I had one of my favorite shows yet this past Saturday.  I set aside the acoustic set and performed an uptempo/semi-dance set with a fabulous three piece at the Russell.  Hat's off to my bass player, Dave Smith who has been on a mission since the Webster Theater show last November -- -- to surround Jason and I with some of the best musicians in the area.

Dave was full of style AS HE ALWAYS IS -- dressin' better than me :-) and really put the "stank" on the bass!!!  On the keys was Lance James who creatively made each and every song his own.  With a smile on his face and his neck workin' the rhythm, he made new songs by adding harmonies and melodies as well as changing tempos. Last but certainly not least -- Jimmy Arnold on drums.  He came highly recommended by my bandmates Dave, Keith and Jason..and I saw why.  He dazzled EVERYONE flipping and twirling sticks, playing the walls and window sills without missing a beat!  What a show!  Thank you, guys...I learned so much and enjoyed every bit!!!

It's still dark out and sleep is starting to call me...hopefully it's cooler upstairs.

Jul 13 2006 - 9:05 PM

Last entry...June 23rd!!??!!  Ugh!  Just call me a WORKIN' musician.  Everytime get on the computer, I check AND RESPOND to all of my email accounts, check and respond to my MySpace messages, and update the gigs.  By the time I get to the JOURNAL I'm ready for bed or have to get going elsewhere.

Music has gone past the feelin of  part-time it is what I am doing these days  . My days are pretty full. I've been learning lots of new music, rehearsing and performing all 3 "products" -- the "LIVE" Band, Acoustic Set and National Anthem...in addition to working with the band I'm going to PA with, Dimension 6.

Talked to Matt (one of the producers Jason and I will be working with)...he's also been pretty busy on other projects.  We're supposed to start working next week.  I'm very excited.  I love working in the studio...headphones and all!  Off to very sweet dreams.

ps.  Hugs and Kisses to my poor Mom who broke her arm this morning  .  Super speedy recovery...I love you!!!

Jun 23 2006 - 9:58 PM

My friends showered me with so much love yesterday.  It started with a call from Jackie!   (Most of you know Jackie assists on vocals)..."Just wishing you a good gig!"  Jackie knew I was going through some vocal "stuff" and was full of encouraging words (as she ALWAYS is).  Good lookin' out, girl!

Then...a visit from Mosey!  Right before the Russell show, Maureen (Mosey) stopped by the house with a belated b-day present.  It was a beautiful necklace that I WILL BE WEARING next week at the next Russell show.  We talked and laughed for a bit-- your timing is perfect, Mosey!  (...and the card...thank you)

The Russell...My friends came out in full force!!!  You made my night!   CC the earrings you bought me were perfect with the outfit! Annie, T, Biss, Peggy ...you are all tooooooo funny and fun!!!  ...and to the CHMS/Boogie Down Bristol TEACHERS-- you got it going on!!!!  Thank you for singing, dancing, laughing and smiling...and hanging afterwards.   I was overwhelmed by your energy and support.

Jun 20 2006 - 11:44 PM

I had such a good rehearsal with Dave and Keith tonight.  ...Better yet, all of rehearsals are getting better and better.  The "players"...(as do I)...come READY TO PLAY!!!  (Thank you ) .  I've been working weekly with my A-Team guys (and gal) and another group of talented musicians that I will be going to PA with in the middle of August -- Dimension 6.

In addition to playing REAL GOOD music, I'm learning a lot of music theory from them each time we rehearse.  It ...THEY are all really helpful!  (I'm actually thinking of taking a few music classes...)  Anyways, I still have more music to learn, but it's managable as long as I stay consistent with my practicing and surround myself with solid musicians (part of the "grind" too!).

Our calendar is filling up, which is exciting and encouraging for a "new jack" like me.  I do have to get better at making sure to leave time to write and work on originals.  (HELLO...I do want to get my CD project finished...I barely did any work on it the past few days.)  I'll have a few hours tomorrow morning though...

Jun 10 2006 - 9:29 PM

Today's my birthday (and Amy's too!)...hey, ho!

I'm really thrilled to be a working musician now!  I couldn't say this a year ago.  As excited as this all is, the "grind" can be so overwhelming and even discouraging at times.  We work hard trying to stay on top of the different facets.  Writing music, choosing and learning new covers, finding and rehearsing with musicians, calling and "selling our product" to clubs and venues, calling/meeting with studios and producers, marketing around town and managing the website...sometimes it all makes by head spin a bit.  REALITY CHECK...it's my life and I am the in the driver's seat of this journey, for sure!!!  (I just need to adjust the speed limit sometimes!)

Reflecting...it's been quite an exciting year full of "the new".  Musically, I'm trying different things and taking more (calculated) risks business-wise.  I'm still developing my style...a mix of R&B, Pop and Jazz.  I'm also in the midst of learning several blues and jazz standards in addition to some contemporary jazz tunes.  We are looking to book in new venues and private events.  I like the newness of it all and the learning that comes with it.

Jun 2 2006 - 8:59 PM

Kenney's was OFF THE CHAIN last night!  I was so excited to have my sister, Latareece (aka Taree, or T-Bone) come out.  It's the first gig she's been able to attend because she works the "nightshift".  She brought me extra energy...(and some potato skins too at the break!)   Thanks T-Bone!!!!  mwah!!

...and then in gets even better... At the start of the second set, Charmagne came through after her gig at the Russell.  About five minutes after that my friend Dave Davis...(INCREDIBLE SAX PLAYER just back from overseas) showed up too!!!  I was so excited and amped.  They both sat in for most of the second set and it became an all-out, high-energy jam session!   We did a little Mustang Taree (for my sister), some Stevie Wonder and Luther...and CARELESS WHISPER like it's never been done before!!!  Thanks Char and Davy D....and to Dave Smith (bass) and Keith Cooper (keys), you guys really held it down -- very nicely

May 26 2006 - 11:21 PM

The Russell, The Russell, The Russell!!!  Filled in Charmagne, who had a gig with her other band, Eight to the Bar  --  (thanks, girl) -- Great gig...

Before I share, I need to send the biggest shout out to my boy, Freddie for saving me some of his BANGIN' carrot cake during the break -- OMG-- and Jacque and Sonia for sending me home with a pile of incredible jerk wings...now THAT'S SUPPORT!!!  Thanks

Feels so good to play a packed room of real nice folks.  (I get to talk and mingle with them before and during breaks.-- Hey Nicole, Michelle and Marissa, Darryll, Ian, and Veronica...nice meeting you!)  The people that come down to the Russell really come to hear live music and even sing along.  I added some DeBarge to the set list -- I Like It -- and they seemed to like it too!   The crowd sang the background verse... "I like it, I like it , I really really like it" ...over and over again and I just felt like I was in a concert!!!  I love those moments.

My asthma has been really bothering me -- I'm on a steriod and antibiotic and relief seems to be in sight.  Relief surely came last night when Javier, Mosey, Joan, Cheryl, Sonia, Jacque, Maude, Fred and  "Virginia" came in.  They reserved that LONG table right in front!  ...and when Javier ever said he brought his guitar and that he'd sit in for a few, I saw the light and the Answer was YES!!!  (song title on Jav's album

Thanks Dave and Keith -- as always, it was fun, guys!!!

May 23 2006 - 9:51 PM

After the gig on Friday, Jackie and I went to see Eight to the Bar at Romas for their last set. When we drove up I could hear a Jackson 5 tune blastin' with Charmagne's vocals...sounding like little Michael :-) They were performing mainly Motown -- which I love! The band is fantastic and I can't wait to see the "Swing" thing!!!

Saturday evening Jason and I went to Mohegan with Javier and Mosey. Jav performed the National Anthem at the Sun's game. We stayed for the first half and then went to see Jose Feliciano in the Wolf Den. The line to see Jose was fierce, but the casino reserved a table for Javier...and we were his GUESTS... I won't even lie -- it's was pretty cool just "walkin" in... Jose performed mainly covers and a few originals while playing his guitar (and percussion instruments) flawlessly. ...If there could be more moments like that!!!

May 21 2006 - 9:59 PM

Jason and I are so blessed to have such supportive parents...we couldn't have pulled off this busy week/weekend without them!!! Love yous...

Friday nights show at the Comet Lounge was definitely one to remember.  The band was HOT!!!  They are all so talented and work so hard individually to make a great show; so to Dave Smith (bass), Jason Arnold (drums), Keith Cooper (keyboards), Jackie Morris (background) and Kelsey Baker (background) -- Jason and I thank you...WOW Y'all!!!

The audience was full of our die/hard supporters (Joan, Rosa, Cheryl and the "guys", Ashley and 'dem, Ralfie Boo Boo and crew, Carla and family... Sabrina, Carl... I APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT).  What took the night to a new high was having so many of my friends come out to see the show for the first-time (Melissa, Gigi, Karen, Felicia and the Guys )!!!  Darryl and Marie Dennis came all the way from Danbury   (check out your picture in the photo gallery!)  Friends from the University - Dick, Terry, Gary and Marcia-  And I cannot forget to thank Mom and Jim for getting the dance party started!!!

To Jason Bartlett , owner of the Comet Lounge/Dishes Restaurant- thank you for having us, you got a pretty cool vibe going on there!  To Toni Williams - your hospitality was so kind and very much appreciated - you're good people!!! (ps. the wings were bangin'!)

Off to bed...still more to write but I'm BEAT!  ...TOMORROW...a bit on Eight to the Bar and a fun night with Javier at Mohegan...

May 18 2006 - 12:02 AM

I auditioned for a production of the WIZ tonight and enjoyed every bit of the process. It's as it people came with this "bring it" mentality to "own the stage" and some of them really BROUGHT IT!!!  I learned a lot watching them.

I met a young man (whose name escapes me now). He is just 16 turning 17 and posessed the vocals, confidence and competence, ya know? I just watched him and thought with an affect and presence like that, the sky is the limit for him.   I also met several other fun people who "brought it" too...Joz, Terri, Famecia, Duncan and Robert to name a few;-) ...can't forget "Ralfie boo boo" as he is called by his friends (a HOT SKETCH)...THANKS FOR THE RIDE...WHAT A DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 12 2006 - 9:53 PM

Get out the marching band and put the violins away...

It's been almost a week since I've written.  I've received some kind emails and phone calls in regards to my last journal about losing my lyrics.  Thank you for your kindness:-)

I'm using the laptop in bed and I was getting ready to write a bit about my thoughts for tomorrow's Special Olympic event for which I will be performing the National Anthem.  I just reached into my night stand for a pen and FOUND MY LYRICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I declare I don't remember putting them there -- that's got me feeling pretty good right now!

ps.  I'm so excited to sing tomorrow morning.  The Special Olympics is such and incredible event and it's an honor to be participating.  I hope my voice is ready tomorrow because allergies and asthma have had me a bit under the weather...

pss.  I FOUND MY LYRICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 6 2006 - 9:13 PM

Not feeling too good right now. (Get out the violins...) It's not bad enough that this pollen has my eyes, nose, throat and breathing all twisted; I sat down to write for a little bit just now and realized that lyrics to about 7 or 8 songs (and songs in progress) are probably in the trash. I feel like GARBAGE (no pun intended);Just really, really bad about it. Some of what I wrote will come back to me just by listening to the tracks, but most of it was in my head and on paper only. The songs were in a spiral jounral that has about 100 pages in it. I ripped out the 20 or so tattered pages to use the ladybug journal for my email/contact book for the gig at Kenney's. I left the sheets on the kitchen counter... I swear I would cry if it wouldn't irritate my ALREADY irritaed eyes. LIVE AND LEARN

May 5 2006 - 8:46 PM

Kenney's...let's just start off by saying, we were supposed to play from 8-10pm, but ended playing for an extra hour! People were really enjoying themselves; singing and dancing and stuff. (And so was the band!) My voice was so tired by the end of the second set, though. Myrna, my voice teacher has been working on my breathing -- it's what got me through the last set. The cherry on top for the night was being presented with a plate of hot wings "on the house" by Donny :-)

May 3 2006 - 11:02 PM

All set for Kenney's tomorrow...set list is ready and clothes are ironed...all set!  I had such a good time playing there last month.  The crowd (made up of most of our friends) was full of energy and the food was DELICIOUS.  Although Donny, (one of the owners) and his partners are doing renovations the place is still so full of character inside.  I've been looking forward to this gig since Donny booked us for first Thursdays   Off to bed...

Apr 28 2006 - 11:40 PM

I had fun last night filling in for Charmagne again at the Russell. (THANKS FOR THINKIN OF ME, CHICK )  She was doing a private gig with her new band Eight to the Bar.

It's so alive and full of energy in there at the Russell.  It gets very crowded there to the point of a "standing room", but they don't seem to mind it at all.  Seems like the people come out to be "part of" and they give back to the performers.  The crowd sang aloud in unison and (in tune  )to Sweet Thing, Chain of Fools and Killing Me Softly

Amanda, a poet I met last Monday when my "gurl "Charmagne was hosting, shared some inspiring words thoughout the show.  She is able to just write on the "fly" and come up with sheer art.   Not to mention, she made such a nice first and second impression.  I left feeling like I've known her for years.  Keep doing what you're doing, Amanda....Yo Go!

Thanks to all who came out...Jason's got your pics up!

Apr 23 2006 - 8:53 PM

Nothing like rainy days...I wrote two songs and a number of hooks between yesterday and today.  I go through these moments when ideas on lyrics, melodies and rhythms are swarming me.  I just write and write and hum into my little recorder...because sometimes they go as fast as they come.

Apr 22 2006 - 8:48 AM

I finally have a moment to sit and write a bit! Lots of exciting stuff going on:-)

Last week I was interviewed by Donna Christopher from the Danbury News Times and she published a really nice article about me. The timing lined up perfectly with my Thursday night show at Western CT ST University, my alma mater. Since it has been printed, I have been in contact with lots of "blasts from the past"! Mr. and Mrs. Hufnagel read the paper and contacted me through email. (I was good friends with their son, Joe, middle school through high school).  They came out to the show Thursday night and even brought me a DOZEN YELLOW ROSES!!! It was so great seeing them.  I received another email yesterday and I'm happy to say that they have already "reserved" seats FRONT AND CENTER for my first show on BROADWAY Thank you both for your kind words and encouragement!

It was so surreal playing WCSU. The campus is completely remodeled and the faces of the students are soooooooooooooooo young!!! I found myself sharing more behind the mic than I usually do and the students and staff were so receiving. The music was REALLY flowin' too...Dave and Keith -- THANKS. My mom and Granny came out and were beaming the entire show (I LOVE YOU!!!) I even got to share the mic with Mom for a little "Mustang Sally" and she crooned the harmony!!! It was a night to remember for sure!

Apr 18 2006 - 10:15 PM

Last night I went down to the Russell and it was packed, yet again.  Every Monday night, the owner, Hugh, has live spoken word poetry hosted by my friend, Charmagne.  Some of the poets were really moving.  One poet, named Peaches, was a neo-soul beauty with a full head of natural hair pulled off of her face.  She put words together like a painter to a canvass.  The "lyrics" in conjuction with her intonation had me so hooked.   What a craft.

Apr 15 2006 - 11:31 PM

It's been another whirl wind week of working, writing, rehearsing -- ending with the VIBZ show! We assumed the crowd would be much lighter from the email list responses and given the holiday weekend. But we were pleasantly surprised by some of the UHA staff who attended the show, The Walkers (hey!) and others who came out. The crowd was fun and sang right along with my "Mustang Sally" and up tempo "Close to You". Freddie, Joyce (you bring me joy),her sisters, Cookie and Ashley (Happy Birthday) along with Deb and her daughter were also there showing support...THANK YOU!

My good friend, Jackie, who was also singing backup vocals last night, and I had a few funny/fun momemts...
"FUNNY" MOMENT #1 : I had put so much lotion on my feet prior to the gig that my heels were slipping off. We spent the final five minutes prior to going on stage in the ladies room CRACKING UP while trying to wipe my soles dry. WELCOME TO MY WORLD, People!

FUN MOMENT #2: Jackie's birthday is Monday, so of course we had to do a little song on stage. Afterwards the band, Jason and Freddie had cupcakes with Jackie during the break. I just love that "gurl"!

Jason and I plan to take a few days off work and slow down a bit. We are going to enjoy the holiday weekend with our families. I can't wait...and the weather is going to be fabulous...

Apr 6 2006 - 11:33 PM

Kenneys was a blast!  To my musicians - Dave Smith on bass and Keith Cooper on keys...you were fantastic.  I appreciate you, your time and your energy.  I want to thank everyone coming out and showing some love (Art and Bill ).  By far one of the most fun gigs yet.  The set list worked so well and the crowd was into it.  Nice place you got there, Donny!

Joyce (you bring me joy) and her sisters, Cookie and Ashley (Happy Birthday) came out again with a girlfriend, Cyndi...They were "Sheer Energy!!!"  You all forgot to leave me a rib...uh huh!

I also got to share the mic with young, Paige!  She sang RESPECT and owned it!!!  (I'm so proud...and so is your mom!)  It's clear that Nicole (Paige's Mom) has an ear for the #1 R&B hits because she seemed to know the words to most of the songs too!  I'm so happy you made it out.

We...Lynn...took lots of great pictures (Thanks, sweetie).  Jason will have them up ASAP!  Anita...girl...I have to put up both pictures of you and Gary...He was POSIN', too funny!  And ERIN!!! with Dan the construction works who knows the words to Gotta Be...that was a highlight of the night for sure.

Much love to the "guys"...I love yous.  Gotta end with giving Chuck kudos for his "RIDE SALLY RIDE!!!"  Thank you for being your crazy self...you had everyone in stitches   Good Night Everybody!!!

Apr 6 2006 - 8:35 AM

Daylight savings is here already.  I love waking up to the sun and having longer days.  I can't believe it's April (waking up to snow   on the car was not so pleasant!)...March was a blur.

I spent most of last month learning new covers.  I finally have enough music vary my sets for different venues.  When I started last fall, I was so overwhelmed by having to learn so much music.  I'm finally to the point where I will be able to add my originals to the set...soon

Mar 25 2006 - 9:40 AM

A funny story...

One of the most enjoyable moments of the Russell gig was sharing the mic with audience. As I was working on the photos in the PHOTO GALLERY, I came across one of a woman who looked -- so much -- like Tamyra Gray from American Idol's first season. From the mic, I asked if she was related to her. She laughed and told me her name was Liz Gray, but she wasn't related. She happened to be in such close proximity that I could reach her with the mic. I can't remember which song...it was either "RESPECT" or "Lady Marmalade"...well...when I handed her the mic -- Mz Liz did "THE THANG"...the proof is in the PICTURE :-)

Turns out Liz Gray is HOT 93.7's "Liz the traffic chick", from the Hot Morning Crew -- which we found out from Javier. She was such a good sport about participating and all. My friend, Maureen happened to be listening to the Morning Show on the radio the next day. Liz was talking to Nancy Barrow and DJ Buck about her musical "DEBUT" at the Russell with...LASHONDA FARRELL!!! We had a great laugh -- OUT LOUD!

...I always wondered what life would be like if my name was Wendy or Lisa or Jackie. (I wouldn't change it for the world, Mom and Dad!) For that reason...when I introduce myself, I usually say, "My name is Latanya, like Lasagna..." which I FAILED to do that night. This journey has been full of laugh out loud, memorable moments, like this one. Mz. Liz, thank you for your willingness to participate and bring energy to the set! I'm happy to have been part of your musical DEBUT :-)

Mar 24 2006 - 11:56 PM

The Russell... It was my first time doing just the bass and keyboard type of vibe (Thanks Steve and Keith) and it felt good. Jav sat in for a few songs which is ALWA YS a treat. And I had the opportunity to share the mic with singers, Melissa and Lauree. I'd have to say that it was one of my favorite gigs yet!

The place was packed full of friends, new supports (Joyce, Ashley and Cookie!!!)and the "regulars" who just really enjoy music and atmosphere. Old friends, like Wayne Webster and Mariah Freitag came out for the first time as well as new ones...Freddie and the Joan Ortiz crew!!! The crowd seemed to know and like my music and were eager to participate in my favorites like "Lady Marmalade" and "Mustang Sally"!!! There is NOTHING like getting positive energy from the crowd.

We had a couple of birthdays, too, which added to the fun. Happy Birthday again to our friend Ebby and a fun-loving woman I met, by the name of Sharman, who -- by the way -- got some FABULOUS shoes from her "girls"!!!

(The pictures will be us in a few days ;-) A big THANK YOU to Charmagne for having me sit in for her while she was vacationing :-) All in all it felt good to try something new!

Mar 20 2006 - 11:39 PM

My girlfriend, Rose, colored my hair today, just to do something new (and get rid of a gray hair or two...okay maybe THREE). I think I'll get a new top tomorrow and have Mosey check it out (lol)...she has a way of putting outfits together. Her friends at work call her a "Put Together Sally"...I enjoy being the canvas!!!

I'm getting butterflies as Thursday approaches. Rehearsal went really well with Keith Cooper, who will be playing keys and Steve Porter, who will be on bass. The whole coffee-house/intimate vibe is a new show for me but, so RIGHT for The Russell. The place already has a built-in crowd and we have about 40 confirmed family, friends and fans coming out. It should be a great time! Gotta check the MySpace -- CONSTANT NETWORKING -- then off to bed!

Mar 17 2006 - 12:24 AM

Yesterday's fortune cookie had a quote by an unknown author. which read..."Why are there so many people who never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity?"  Those word really got me thinking and motivated me to "pick up the pace" a bit on all fronts of our fairly new journey into THE BIZ...

I'm just getting in from finishing-up the band demo.  Although I'm exhausted right now, I am so excited to finally have it done and start "shopping" it!  I wonder what opportunites it will bring.

Jason pointed out how blessed we've been to have been gigging on a regular basis without a demo.  Each gig has brought with it our next opportunity , which we were ready for...
  • Open mic at Black-Eyed Sallys is where I met Keith Cooper .
  • Keith asked me to join his band Stimulation, which had a gig at a VIBZ.
  • VIBZ is where I met Lance James and Tony Harrington who featured me with their bands.
  • The night I was rehearsing with Tony Harrington, Stephanie Monroe, who went to high school with Tony (and is also one of my girlfriend's sisters) called to tell me about the auditions for Songs in the Key of Life at the BUSHNELL.
  • I met Charmagne at the BUSHNELL auditions and we were both cast in the play.
  • Charmagne called me to fill in for her at the Russell this up and coming Thursday while she's on vacation.

I'll sum up with a quote from Mark Houlahan on Opportunity:
"If you want your life to be a magnificent story, then begin by realizing that you are the author and everyday you have the opportunity to write a new page."

Mar 13 2006 - 12:56 PM

I went to see RENT last night at the Shubert. The theater was pretty full for a Sunday evening. The musical is fantastic...the vocals, the music, the blocking... I kept envisioning myself up there...Maureen or Mimi, maybe??? I've got some "homework" to do...

Mar 8 2006 - 8:26 PM

Yesterday was such an exciting day! While reading the morning paper, Jason and I found a front full-page article about our friend, Javier, in the Life section of the Hartford Courant. It was exciting. Jav's second album, "Left of Center" went on sale in stores yesterday . DJ Buc and Nancy Barrow on Hot 93.7 also played some of his new music yesterday morning. This is so special to us because Jason and I had the incredible experience of being able to visit studios in LA and NY while Javier was writing, recording and mixing. It was like something one would see on MTV or VH1. His next single, "The Answer is Yes" is one of my very favorites -- I actually sat and watched him co-write this song with Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken in their studio in Bronsxville, NY. Each time I hear him perform it, I love the song more and more. I tried to support and buy my copy but I couldn't find one. I received emails from some of you who also tried without success. Family friends, the Rzonca'a ordered one at Borders (you all are too smart!   ) Mosey came over and shared hers with us for a bit last night (thanks, Sweetie) To our delight, she pointed out that Jav showed us some "love" in his notes at the end of the album. I was all teeth!!! I feel like I made a bit of CD history (I can be so nerdy sometimes) Well, people, let's get back out there and show this creative artist and great guy some love and support -- Javier's "Left of Center" in stores now!!!

Mar 1 2006 - 9:35 PM

Art...Art...Art...Thank you for making me look so "on top" of things :-) Nice slideshow, you techie!!! We love you. (Art manages the website etc...Feel free to show him some love at art@latanyafarrell.com!!!)

Feb 26 2006 - 8:35 PM

I can't believe the show has come and gone. There is nothing like being on a stage with the spotlight on you...It's almost like an out of body experience with a bit of a rush to it! It felt the show went well. I tried to stay in the moment and take in as much as I could during the performance. I was so tempted to smile at my parents and sister who sat RIGHT IN THE FIRST ROW!!! I did sing towards them when I could, though...just because :-) The cherry on top was having both of my grandmothers there...Granny and Grandma :-) The highlight of last night was coming out after the performance and seeing DROVES of family (Aunt Rita and "dem"), friends (It was sooo great to see you,Sib!), colleagues from Bristol and The University of Hartford, in addition to many of my incredible students with their families. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! ...for the beautiful bouquets, cards, hugs and kisses, and for even asking me to sign programs (I had a STAR moment :-) You were all so loving, enthusiastic and supportive. Now...off to the studio!!! Jason and I are so excited for the next project...

A little over twelve hours past the last entry...(in the words of my friend and cast mate, Charmagne)...WE landed on our feet! The music was on, our hearts were in it and the muscial just took on a life of it's own. From "places" to the final number it all felt right. At the end of the night, the cast came out to greet our families and friends. I went from "Oh, Hey" to sobbing when I looked over and saw Mr. Smith and Kyle. (Jim Smith...Mr. Smith...introduced me to my first adult dramatic role/musical experience -- FAME -- which I starred in with Kyle) When he cast me for the role in FAME, I believe he saw something within me that I didn't realize even existed. I couldn't find the words to express my gratitude and appreciation for him instilling in me the love I have for the craft. One more run tomorrow and I welcome it with open arms!

Well, tonight's the night. READY OR NOT. I thought I’d feel more amped than uneasy. I can't lie or even try and embellish what I've been experiencing or feeling; elation...frustration to tears...(almost) all consuming – a roller coaster. I miss my family and friends with whom I've only been able to barely "touch base" with, especially this week. (I love you so much, Jason.) I am so encouraged by my family friends and fans... For the positive emails, messages on the phone and the guest book sign ins. THANK YOU. It takes me to a better place in the midst of confusion, stress and exhaustion :-) I knew the time constraints when I auditioned (right, Lisa?) It has been such hard work mentally and physically – more than I ever envisioned; much of which directly relates to the time frame. To Javier, Charmagne, Tash, Lawrence and Larry -- I am blessed to be working a cast that can adjust and stay lifted through it all. I "asked" for this. I wanted this. I can do this...WILL do this and give it all that I have -- READY OR NOT.

Feb 20 2006 - 7:47 PM

What a blur! I can't believe it is Monday already...THE WEEK OF!!! Since Friday the cast has really been on the grind working on lyrics and blocking and blocking and lyrics... It's a blessing Little Larry and I have school vacation this week so we can really focus on the musical. Speaking of vacation, the Bushnell had a children's acting camp (with parents) working in another room today. As part of their workshop, the cast was invited to perform three numbers from the musical for them. Those young faces were so excited to see us perform (and so were we). The vocals and presentation of the ENSEMBLE (see 2/16 entry...) was ON! Right now I'm physically and mentally beat -- but motivated, especially after today. Since it's still early, I think I'll sit with Jason and watch a bit of TV (I haven't seen anything on television since 2/3). Before I go to bed I'll "hit the books” one more time; I still have a little grind in me tonight!

Feb 16 2006 - 11:18 PM

John (director) has really been trying to instill in the cast the importance and necessity of working as an ENSEMBLE. (ENSEMBLE – according to Webster’s – a group producing a single effect; emphasizing the roles of all the performers as a whole rather than a star performance.) I have worked in ENSEMBLE situations on just a few occasions. In my adult life, I’ve never really put myself in a position to be dependent on others for much of anything, let alone to help “produce a single effect”… Tonight’s “rehearsal” took place at Charmagne’s (Mom) weekly gig at the Russell on Pratt Street in Hartford. (What a nice club…check it out!) We ate a little, laughed a lot and sang. It was a real trip watching Charmagne perform…or shall I say entertain. She has such neo-soul “flava” and held down the vocals flawlessly, performing Jill Scott to India to Anita Baker. Charmagne really works the crowd too…(OMG!!!) She kept them involved and on several occasions, in stitches. After the first set, Charmagne brought the cast (Songs in the Key of Life) up to the mic to introduce us and promote the musical. Tash (musical director and grandmother) killed the crowd with “Killing Me Softly”, then Javier (boyfriend) and I performed “If I Ain’t Got You”; I had to start the song all over because I had a brain freeze. It’s one of those moments that you dread happening, but get over…we laughed and moved on! I really expected that to be it…but then Charmagne asked Jav and me to each to perform solos, so I started to sing “Sweet Thing”, which is on my set list. She (jokingly) went up one side and down the other on the mic because she had planned to sing that later in the set. We ended up singing it together and it was a blast! The final song we performed was an ENSEMBLE piece from the musical called “Loves in Need”. Tash has lead on this one and the rest of us sing a beautifully -- harmonized background (arranged by Tash). I was in a zone with the cast members…high energy and really feeling the piece (and so was the crowd). What a moment!!! I wish I had it on video. (…I kept saying to Maureen that I felt like I was in an MTV or Vh1 (…BET J) movie.) The play is in a week and there are still songs and blocking to learn in the next few days. But not tonight…because tonight we worked on our “ENSEMBLE”.

Feb 14 2006 - 11:10 PM

Today -- being Valentine's day -- I find myself just so completely in love Jason and thankful for his support in all of this play "stuff"; from me being away EVERY evening and soon to be on weekends to NOTHING but Stevie Wonder coming from each and every CD player in the house (and car). He’s really been great. I'm just getting in from rehearsal. Charmagne, Tash and I worked on some percussive background harmonies (it sounds sooooooo cool) and dance steps. We were on the grind today, so much that Charmagne and I were reduced to just two laugh out loud moments -- one of them happened on the way to a powder room break! We pretty much have what we learned and practiced today all DOWN!!!!!! I also got chance to see and hear some of Little Larry’s solo performances while he was working with John (director). He’s such a burst of energy with an amazing voice. It's all coming together and shaping this incredible story piece by piece. It is HARD WORK though. I'm so happy that I have tomorrow and Thursday off of work!!!

Feb 12 2006 - 9:51 PM

There is nothing like a blizzard to slow life down. It's been such a settling day; I got to sleep in, play in the snow and just be still for a while. I had time to listen to Stevie Wonder's album over and over and over again...what an amazing piece of art full of powerfully honest words. (I've been playing "Saturn" and "Love's In Need "over and over again...the lyrics are beautiful) Most who know me, know that although I’m not dramatically emotional, I am very sentimental and passionate. I read my girlfriend, Jackie's note on the Guest book page and smiled and cried at the same time. She's been such a special part of Jason and my lives since the early days in college and has been encouraging me, us, and been so grounding through this exciting venture. (Jacke has even assisted on background vocals...) Tonight I sit so thankful for snowy days, Stevie Wonder's words, and steadfast friends and family.

Feb 10 2006 - 11:10 PM

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. There is a lot of (beautiful) music to learn - lyrics, harmonies, various vocal percussion sounds (the play is done a capella). But I can do it. I have met my match with Ms. Charmagne. She is incredibly quick and humorously witty (a lot like my sister, Latareece). She makes me laugh so hard that it has become uncontrollable. (She knows it too...) It's so neat to be sharing this all with Javier. We've had a few laugh out loud moments ourselves getting the "boyfriend/girlfriend kinks" straightened out. (I'll share more AFTER the play...) Not to give too much away...I do dance with Jav a bit and let's just say looking graceful ain't easy (OMG). I really feel like I fell down the stairs or something...PROPS TO ALL THE "BALLERINAS" :-)

Feb 8 2006 - 11:07 PM

One of my students, Larry Lopez, has been cast to play my little brother!!! (Just when I thought life couldn't get any sweeter!) I'm so, so proud!

Feb 6 2006 - 11:39 PM

FIRST NIGHT OF REHERSAL - I'm wired right now. We spent the evening getting to know each other and on housekeeping stuff. So far the cast consists of me - the daughter, Javier - my boyfriend, Charmagne - mother, and Tash - grandmother. The director is still looking for someone to play my little brother and father. It was great meeting the staff. The director, John Grimsely is so unique and seems full of creative energy. Natasha Bolden (Tash), the musical director has the voice of an angel. She has such vocal control (and a great laugh). Diana Shortes, who will be designing any costumes or props -- I can't wait to see what she comes up with. The four of us along with Javier, were given a tour of the Bushnell by Dorothy Berloni, the director of programming. We got to stand on the stage that we will be performing on. It was so beautiful and INCREDIBLE; it made my heart race.

Feb 4 2006 - 10:24 AM

OH, WHAT A NIGHT!!! The club was PACKED last night!!! They had to bring chairs on the dance floor for people. I was so excited and full of energy seeing a room full of my family, friends, co-workers, Jason's co-workers, staff members from BALLY'S (wink!). I felt so loved. I tried to hug and kiss everyone after the first set. If I missed you, I'm so sorry. I was proud to have Javier be part of this. It was like the cherry on top of my sundae. When we sang, "If I Ain't Got You", it felt like I was at the Grammy's performing. He's such an amazing vocalist. Oh, what a night!

Feb 3 2006 - 5:33 PM

LATANYA FARRELL LIVE! Tonight. We are expecting a big turn out...I'm a bit numb and very nervous. Jason has really been on the grind for this one. He and Art did a solid publicity push. I had my first radio interview a few minutes ago. I kept saying to myself LISTEN-LISTEN-LISTEN, BE ARTICULATE and DON'T RAMBLE. Overall, it went pretty well. Juan Castillo - 94.3 FM - was so personable. It was surreal hearing myself; I speak in a higher pitch than I thought. SHOWTIME in about 3 hours...

Feb 1 2006 - 1:02 PM

I got it! I got it! I got it! I auditioned last week for a musical at the Bushnell -- Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life". I'm going to be the daughter; I can't even believe this...THE BUSHNELL!!! ...And my friend, Javier was cast too. I think Dorothy (from the Bushnell) said he will be playing my boyfriend but I can't remember because my head is happily spinning. (I've been screaming for the last hour!!!)

Jan 31 2006 - 11:14 PM

I couldn't be more grateful for all that I have and what I am experiencing. It all started with "that" phone call about the CT Star Search competition from my girlfriend, Rose. Winning that contest changed me...for the better. I started dreaming big, REALLY BIG! Only one life to live...
